Welcome to School of Pure and Applied Sciences

The mission of the School is to provide high quality education based on modern scientific teaching and research techniques and to produce highly trained scientists in the various disciplines to meet the ever growing challenges of a dynamic world in the pure sciences and to offer practical solutions to problems affecting humanity in applied sciences.

The school forms one of the thirteen (13) schools of the university and has a student population approximately 2000.

Structure of the School:
The School is headed by a Dean who coordinates the following 6 teaching departments each headed by a Chairman. The 6 departments are listed in the table below:

Entry Requirement for Undergraduate Programmes

Mean grade of C+ (Plus) at KCSE or equivalent with a minimum of a C (plain) in Mathematics and at least C+ (Plus) or equivalent in any three subjects chosen from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geography OR at least grade C (Plain) at KCSE with a Diploma of at least a credit pass in a relevant field of study from a recognized institution OR KACE with two (2) Principles and one (1) Subsidiary.

Postgraduate degree programmes

Postgraduate programmes are offered in various specialization areas depending on the departments.

  • To qualify for a Masters programme, one needs to hold a bachelors degree (Upper Second Class). Those with Lower Second are required to have at least two years relevant working experience.

  • Candidates must also satisfy departmental requirements before admission in any department.

Ph.D Progrmmes:
For admission into Ph.D programmes, a candidate must have a Masters degree from a recognized University and fulfill other departmental requirements.

The School has separate laboratory facilities and specialized equipment for each of the departments.
A key facility is the Level 2 Biosafety Plant Transformation Laboratory (PTL) and Glasshouse. This is the only approved facility of its kind in a University of Eastern and Central Africa and will greatly facilitate teaching and research in plant genetic transformation and molecular biology.

The school is assigned a certain amount of money to the Dean’s Research and Travel Grant vote. The funds are meant to assist Master students in doing their research and also enable members of staff who have been invited to conferences abroad to be able to travel and do their presentations.
A number of them from various departments have benefitted from the Dean’s research and Travel Grant award. Below are some of the beneficiaries-;

Research grant;
1. Eliakim Mbaka a PhD student from the department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology received kshs. 100,000.
2. Maundu Anne a PhD student from the department of Zoological Sciences received Kshs 100,000.
3. Olum Fredrick Odondo a PhD student from the department of Mathematics received kshs. 100,000.

Travel Grant
The following among many others have had the privilege of getting the Dean’s travel grant award to travel to various continents to present their PhD abstracts.
1. Prof. Paul Mbugua from plant sciences department received kshs. 438, 567 to travel to Montreal Canada to present his final PhD abstract.
2. Mutuku Winfred Nduku from Mathematics department received kshs. 282,435 to travel to South Africa.
Besides the dean’s research and travel grant the school of pure and applied sciences was privileged to have some of its staff members receive the National Research Fund (NRF) scholarship. Some of the shortlisted members’ are-;
