Asaava Lucas holds a BVM.( Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine), an M.Sc. (Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics) and is Registered and retained Veterinary Surgeon, with the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB). He is pursuing PhD in Immunology in the Department of Zoological Sciences, School of Physical and Applied Sciences (SPAS).

PhD abstract- Asaava Lucas
Zoonotic potential of Tuberculosis (TB) is greatest among pastoral communities due to the practice of consumption of raw camel milk as well as close human - livestock contact. Despite the food safety and economic  implications, TB in camels remains under investigated in Kenya. Critical gaps exist in understanding epidemiological aspects that include; prevalence, distribution, pathology, the Mycobacteria species and strains diversity and the risk factors for infection, which this study aims at determining. This is a cross sectional study involving tuberculin skin testing in camels, sampling suspected cases and questionnaire administration among pastoralists in Samburu county. Prior to tuberculin skin testing, a milk sample will be collected for culture confirmatory test. Pathology scoring will be conducted on camel tissues with abscesses and tubercle lesions encountered at slaughter post-mortem examination. All samples will be collected aseptically, triple packed and transported on ice in cool boxes at +2 to 8°C to the National Reference Tuberculosis laboratory for mycobacteriology and molecular characterization of Acid fast bacilli (AFB) positive sample isolates. Further, all Mycobacteria isolates will be tested for drug susceptibility to Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Streptomycin and Ethambutal using the Resistant Ratio (RR) method on Lowenstein – Jensen solid media. A sample of 138 camel handlers will be targeted for the collection of sputum samples for prevalence determination and the administration of questionnaires to collect risk factor data. Data analysis will be done in STATA (Statacorp, USA) to quantify and qualify the diversity of Mycobacteria from camels and humans in the study area. The epidemiological information on camel TB to be obtained from this study will be useful in the efforts to strengthen control of tuberculosis at the animal-human-ecosystem interface, which is in line with the global TB control strategy.
