Diploma in Information Science - TVET

Introduction

This course is designed to equip the learners with competencies for day to day operations in library and information environment.  It equips the learner with skills and competencies for creation/acquisition, organization and retrieval, preservation and conservation of information resources.  It also equips the learner with skills for implementation of library management systems, conducting research, data analysis and reporting in institutions. 

Programme objectives

On completion of the programme, the candidates will:

·         Have acquired the necessary knowledge, attitudes, skills and techniques to be able to work competently in a library and information environment.

·         Have acquired the necessary knowledge and competence to head a small or medium-sized library or information centre.

·         Be adequately prepared to pursue a bachelor’s degree programme in library and information science.

Justification / Rationale

There are in excess of 600 different types of libraries, documentation centers, archives and records centres in Kenya with an important educational, cultural and informational role to play.  These libraries and information centers need trained personnel to run and manage them. The program will give learners the requisite academic and para-professional skills that are needed for the development of such manpower.

Entry Requirements

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade C-(minus)

                                    Or         

Certificate in Information Science Level 5

                                    Or

Equivalent qualifications as determined by Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQ)

Regular Full-time (Main, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kitui Campus)

·         Basic units of competencies such as communications skills, digital literacy, mathematical proficiency, business development and management skills.
