Introduction

The Ph.D. programme seeks to prepare the next generation of graduates with knowledge and skills necessary in solving current and emerging scientific and technological problems in diverse spheres of life. It is based on the belief in learner-centered experiential approach to learning and teaching which is transformative, so that the graduates are able to create themselves in preparedness for the world of work. 

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to produce graduates with a capacity to train manpower in their fields of specialization and its applications, apply the knowledge and skills in development and analysis of novel ideas for different technological applications in solving societal problems.

Justification/ Rationale of the Programme

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Kenya Vision 2030 development blueprint, and the Kenyatta University Vision, the Ph.D. programme is designed to equip graduates with knowledge, skills and attitudes for analyzing problems from the diverse fields with application to solving scientific problems.. The skills will empower graduates to deal with societal issues including food insecurity, diseases, pollution, and promote sustainable utilization of diverse resources.

Entry Requirements

The common regulations for all postgraduate degrees in the University shall apply. In addition, the general regulations for doctorate degrees in the School of Pure and Applied Sciences shall apply. The following shall be eligible for registration in the Ph.D. programme:

  1. A holder of Master Degree in physics (in the relevant area of specialization), or any other equivalent qualification from Kenyatta University or any other recognized/accredited institution shall be eligible for registration for Doctor of Philosophy in physics
  2. In addition to producing evidence of eligibility for admission, candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in physics may be required to appear for interview by the School and/or Department, to determine their suitability for registration.

 

Mode and structure of Delivery of the Programme

The Ph.D. programme shall be offered on a Full time basis

Programme Duration

The Doctor of Philosophy (Physics) degree programme is by thesis only. The programme covers a minimum of 3 academic years. The student is required carry out independent research and present findings in the form of a thesis under the supervision of at least one member of academic staff in the department in the area of specialization including Atomic Collisions, Environmental Physics and Geophysics.  In addition, the student is required to publish at least 2 articles in a referred Journal.
