Kenyatta University is hosting the International Masterclasses in High Energy Physics (HEP) in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - Internet Reactor Laboratory (IRL). These Masterclasses are organized by the International Particle Physics Outreach Group. They provide an opportunity for high school students to participate in lectures and data analysis sessions by experts in the world's leading HEP experiments. This the first time these Masterclasses are held in Kenya. Experts from seven local Universities and an external experts have joined efforts to hold these Masterclasses at Kenyatta University. The Masterclass sessions at Kenyatta University will concentrate on the ATLAS and AUGER experiments. ATLAS is one of the experiments at the Large Hadrdon Collider (LHC) facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). This is the world's largest facility particle physics research. A number of innovations and discoveries have been made at CERN. These include the creation of the world wide web (WWW) and most recently the experimental evidence of the Higgs boson - which is responsible for the mass of fundamental particles. The Pierre Auger observatory is the world's largest astro-particle physics experiment located in the Pampa Amarilla in Western Argentina. The observatory is built to detect and measure the Ultra-High-Energy-Cosmic-Ray (UHECR) particles from the University in order to understand their origin and existence. The international Masterclasses will contribute to increasing the interest in fundamental physics research among our students.
