Introduction

The M.Sc. (Electronics and Instrumentation) programme seeks to prepare the next generation of graduates with knowledge and skills necessary in solving current and emerging scientific and technological problems in diverse spheres of life. It is based on the belief in learner-centred experiential approach to learning and teaching which is transformative, so that the graduates are able to create themselves in preparedness for the world of work.

Objectives of the programme

The programme aims to produce graduates with a capacity to train manpower in the fields of electronics and its applications, apply the knowledge and skills in instrumentation and control systems and undertake research in the fields of Electronics and Instrumentation

Justification/ Rationale of the Programme

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Kenya Vision 2030 development blueprint, and the Kenyatta University Vision, the M. Sc. (Electronics and Instrumentation) programme is designed to equip graduates with knowledge, skills and attitudes for analyzing scientific, technological data and design and use electronic devices. The skills will empower graduates to deal with societal issues including food insecurity, diseases, pollution, and promote sustainable utilization of diverse resources. The review of M.Sc. (Electronics and Instrumentation) programme was carried out in order to ensure that the courses are rich and are in line with current developments in the field of physics, electronics, instrumentation, technology and demands of the job market. It will enhance employability of the graduates and their capacity to tackle issues facing society.

Entry Requirements for the Programme

The common regulations for all Masters’ degrees in the University shall apply.

The general regulations for master’s degrees in the School of Pure and Applied Sciences shall apply. The following shall be eligible for registration in the Master of Science (Electronics and Instrumentation):

  1. A holder of at least an upper second class honors BSc/B.Ed. (Science), BSc (Engineering), B.Tech. Degree or equivalent from a recognized university, with specialization in Electronics or Instrumentation or Telecommunications, or Information Technology may be considered for admission;
  2. A candidate holding a BSc/B.Ed. (Science), BSc (Engineering), B. Tech. degree with lower second class or equivalent from a recognized University in the areas mentioned in 1.3.2(a) may be considered for admission on condition that he/she produces at least two years working experience in a relevant area with a clear evidence of industrial project exposure or research ability.

Mode and Structure of Delivery of the Programme

The Master of Science in Electronics and Instrumentation shall be offered on a blended mode that includes:

  1. Face to face (Full time)
  2. Blended (for CEP): Online and face to face

Programme Duration

The programme will extend for two academic years. The programmes are offered on semester basis per academic year.  Each academic year shall consist of two (2) semesters for full time students and three (3) sessions for Continuing Education Programmes.  In the first year, the student will take taught courses while in the second academic year; the student will conduct research and write a thesis.
