Bachelor of Library and Information Science

Introduction

Library and information science (LIS) is a field that deals with information management including information collection, organization, access, both in physical and digital forms. The current information society calls for professionals with the kknowledge and skills that would enable one to navigate the information environment. There is an increasing demand for these professionals in the job market, which makes the information science professionals to be competitive, both nationally and internationally. The degree in library and information science gives students the requisite skills and competencies in information and knowledge management, information and communication technologies, information systems, and digital and multimedia systems.

 

Programme objectives

Upon completion of the programme, students have:

·         Acquired the necessary information science knowledge, and skills, to work in, and manage, a school library

·         Acquired the necessary information science knowledge and competence to enable them to make professional decisions expected of personnel in libraries.

·         Been adequately prepared to enable them pursue postgraduate studies such as Master of Library and Information Science.

Justification / Rationale

The role of information in the contemporary information society is undeniable. In this society, libraries are critical in the collection, organization, and dissemination of information to users. The degree of Bachelor of Library and Information Science makes students competent in delivering library services and also enables the students to understand and appreciate the functions and purpose of libraries and Information centres in contemporary society. Given the rapidly evolving field of information science and the technological advancements and changing societal needs, the program provides learners with knowledge of computers and their application in library and information services.

 

Entry Requirements

Mean grade of C+ (Plus) at KCSE

                                                OR

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent with a Diploma in Library and Information Science or Records and Archives Management from a recognized institution

                                                  OR

Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE and progressed from certificate to diploma at Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution

                                                 OR

Holders of KNEC Diploma in Library and Information Science, Diploma in Archives and Records Management, or its equivalent with an overall pass of Credit or Distinction or a Pass with two years relevant experience.
