Introduction

Records management falls under the discipline of information science, a field that deals with information management. Records management however specifically focuses on the creation, storage, access and management of the records that emanate from daily transactions of an institution. These activities call for professionals trained in the area of records management. There is therefore, an increased demand for records managers in the job market, both nationally and internationally. The degree in Records management and information technology gives students the requisite skills and competencies in information, records, and knowledge management, information and communication technologies, and records management systems.

Programme objectives

The program objectives are train professionals who are able to:

·         Identify business opportunities in information and records management   activities and articulate them as employment opportunities

·         Organize different types of information and records formats in accordance to the internationally recognized standards.

·         Identify appropriate ICTs and use them effectively to manage information and to administer records in various organizations

·         Apply knowledge management concepts and strategies to address various forms of information and records management practices

·         Develop and manage records storage and retrieval systems.

Justification / Rationale

Every organization produces records in its daily operations. Records management ensures that these records are properly stored, accessed and managed in accordance with any legal requirements and regulations. For organizations to ensure that their records with historical, fiscal, and legal value are accurately identified and preserved, proper records management activities and systems need to be put in place.

Entry Requirements

Mean grade of C+ (Plus) at KCSE

                                                OR

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent with a Diploma Records and Archives Management or Diploma in Library and Information Science from a recognized institution

                                                  OR

Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE and progressed from certificate to diploma at Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution

                                                 OR

Holders of KNEC Diploma in Records and Archives Management or Diploma Library and Information Science, or its equivalent with an overall pass of Credit or Distinction or a Pass with two years relevant experience
